Kacang Pool Haji @ Taman Dato' Onn

Kacang Pool Haji needs no introduction. I went to the latest outlet at Taman Dato' Onn and tried Kacang Pool Kambing. Yes. Mutton gravy instead of beef. Priced at RM8.00, quite steep for a rather small bowl but it does taste good.

Location: No. 12A, Jalan Sabar, Taman Dato' Onn, Larkin

ps One of the bust curry mutton I've ever had was at Kafe Kejut (a.k.a Fakulti Kejuruteraan & Alam Bina) UKM.

The Substitutes @ Dataran Larkin

From open-air to bricks-and-mortar.

I've never been to their previous place and the first few times I went to their new shop I changed my mind because of the long queue. One fine weekend we got there early and finally, no queue - although the place was filling up fast.

The nachos looks so tempting and salivating but it's just okay. Maybe the bits of meat sets them apart from other places that serves nachos. You definitely can find better burger elsewhere. The one you should not miss is the seafood aglio pasta - the bomb.  A lot of other thing on the menu yet to try but so far, good and reasonably price food. Worth the hype.

I love the ambience, the music. A family friendly place. Overall, will repeat but only when there's no queue.

The Substitutes is located at No 53,Jalan Dataran Larkin 1, 80250 Johor Bahru. Open Wednesday - Monday from 5.00pm to 10.30pm. Closed on Tuesdays.

N Square Restaurant @ Bandar Dato' Onn

N Square Restaurant serves mainly western food. It was my first time and my family's second time. For abah to eat at a restaurant like this more than once, it must be good. Or at least, it suits his palette.

I ordered aglio olio (if I'm not mistaken) and I know although it's a simple dish, people sure know how to messed it up. I just don't dig the fried prawns on top. I find it weird, like asian italian fusion but it didn't work for me.

Everything else was good. I always have bad luck when ordering in groups. It's inevitable.

Location: No. 2, Jalan Perjiranan 2, Bandar Dato' Onn. Opening hours: 5.00pm - 12.00pm. Facebook: N Square Restaurant.

All There Is : Love Stories From StoryCorps - Dave Isay

In recent months I have read a few books that sort of moved me in so many ways. This is one of it, and it is also the book that made me want to read more non-fiction/real life stories.

It is a compilation of conversations/stories from StoryCorps booths about or with the contributor's significant other. It's divided to three parts, Found, Lost, and Found At Last. Found is stories about how the subjects found love (obviously), mostly old people that have been married for 50 years. Lost is about losing the one you loved, due to sickness (Alzheimer) or death. Found At Last is filled with stories of people who lose faith in love but regained their faith later in life when they found the one.

The conversations/stories are heartwarming. I teared-up most of the time when I read the book because I was so touched and overwhelmed by the stories. I was in a dark place and needed some hope that everything's going to be alright and it gave me what I was looking for.

I got the book from this year's Big Bad Wolf at Johor Bahru. I recommend it to all hopeless romantics and anyone who is feeling down and needs a pick me up, the ones that needs to believe in love again. StoryCorps' way of collecting these stories is very interesting. You can read all about them and listen to the recorded stories on their website.

Warung Siput Sedut Wak Dol @ Kampung Pasir

He loves siput sedut cili padi. I love asam pedas anything. It was a good day to have both so we went to Kampung Pasir. It was about 12.30pm, we were very lucky we got a table because it's the weekend and few minutes after some people need to wait for a table.

They served asam pedas, siput sedut cili padi, ikan bakar, siakap goreng, kupang, there's fried tempe too - all authentic Malay dishes. The food, unsurprisingly good, which explains the crowd. I want to try the ikan bakar or siakap goreng but for two people, it seems too much. Maybe next time, with few other people.

Location: Jalan Dato' Musa, Kampung Pasir, Tampoi (Closed on Fridays)

Update September 2016 - Finally, Siakap.
